It's not just that MLB makes sense for Portland - Portland makes sense for MLB.
According to a study commissioned by the Portland Baseball Group and produced by Game Plan LLC (Boston), Portland has the most favorable economic demographics of any city without a MLB team.
The Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area, with more than two million people, is the largest market in the US without a MLB team. It is also the largest market with only one major sports franchise; in fact six smaller markets currently support two franchises and one smaller market supports three. The four markets just ahead of Portland all support three teams: Tampa, Pittsburgh, Denver and St. Louis.
Portland is third (after Los Angeles and New York) in population base per franchise. After acquiring MLB, Portland's metropolitan area will still have more people per major sports franchise (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) than the metropolitan areas of 12 cities with MLB.
Not to mention, Portland actually gets less rain during the baseball season than 13 other MLB cities! This is a city MLB would like to be in.
